One of the best foliage plants for the sunny garden, this perennial is long-lived and very low maintenance. Evergreen in warmer climates, it offers long, woolly leaves of silvery-green, very showy and soft to the touch. Plant it at the feet of your roses and other shrubs, or let it carpet the ground. An effortless source of longlasting color!

Lamb’s Ear takes its name from the shape and texture of its foliage, and this is the appeal of the plant, though it does bloom as well. (The flowers are pale purple, carried on spikes above the foliage, and not particularly breathtaking!) This perennial forms a nice rosette with long, elegant leaves in all directions. Deer and rabbits leave it alone, and it thrives in many places most other plants refuse to inhabit: dry, shallow, and rocky soils; urban settings where air pollution is present; and drought-prone gardens.

Many gardeners use Lamb’s Ear as a carpet beneath other plants in the perennial or shrub border. It does a good job covering ground nicely, and where it is perfectly content, it can spread over time. In warm or humid climates, however, it is primarily an early-season beauty, tending to die back a bit in the sticky heat of August (only to rebound later). It loves dry weather and needs good soil drainage, but other than that is quite unfussy.

Lamb’s Ear makes a good edging for paths, because the foliage is soft and very touchable. In moderate and warm climates it may be evergreen. Expect it to reach 12 to 15 inches high and about 12 inches wide in full sunshine, and let it have a bit of shade in hotter climates. So easy so beautiful, and so unlike everything else in the garden! Zones 4-8.
