What a glorious way to keep the garden green year-round! Pigsqueak is a vigorous, handsome evergreen perennial, sporting leathery dark green foliage that forms neat mounds just 6 inches high but very wide! And as if this weren’t enough, it greets spring with a mass of tall pink bloomstalks!
Pigsqueak, otherwise known as Heartleaf Bergenia, gets its common name from the sound made when you rub the large, thick leaves. They really do snort and squeal like a pig! Useful as groundcover and edging as well as a pleasant presence in the border, it is one of first perennials to bloom each spring, setting its lovely rosy-pink blossoms high above the rosette of foliage. Deadhead them promptly and they may repeat!
But the flowers are only part of Pigsqueak’s appeal. The foliage is heart-shaped at the base (hence the common name of Heartleaf), and then stretches out to nearly a foot long. When the weather turns chilly in fall, the dark green will turn purple and bronze. In warm climates, Pigsqueak is evergreen, keeping its bold leaf color all winter. Farther north, it goes until covered by snow. In late winter, just cut away any damaged or dead foliage, and you’re ready for another season of beauty!
Happy in partial to full shade, this open-pollinated perennial is easy to start from seed, and will naturalize where it is content. Deer and rabbits leave it alone, and it doesn’t mind heavy, poor soil. In fact, once it finds its feet in your landscape, it will put up with a huge range of problems — it loves moist soil, for instance, but will survive periods of dryness. Give it a try this season, and we predict you will soon be recommending it to all your gardening friends! Packet is 30 seeds.
